Global Sight Solutions is an avoidable blindness charity. It was registered with the Charity Commission back in the 1990s by members of Guildford Rotary Club, the aim being to work with Rotary Clubs in the developing world and together establish financially sustainable eye hospitals which can provide a full range of eye care, free to the world’s poorest.
At our meeting on 25 September, Trustee John Miles told us about the work this Rotary charity is doing around the world.
Global Sight Solutions’ mission is to provide free eye care and eye surgery to the very poor in the developing world.
It is 100% a Rotary charity and, by virtue of the work it does, falls into one of the seven Rotary Foundation areas of focus and can therefore obtain generous grants to help with financing its projects. The team work closely with Rotary Clubs in the areas where they are looking to develop eye treatment centres, and the aim is for the local eye hospital to become self sufficient.
The treatment that they deliver is often relatively simple and quick cataract surgery, but can make an enormous difference to the lives of the patients and their families. They also provide treatment for glaucoma, retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy. the teams are supported with equipment, mobile clinics, and patient transport.
Since its inception it has opened 50 eye hospitals and with their help over 1 million people have undergone sight restoring operations.
The trustees are keen to raise awareness of Global Sight Solutions, the work they do and the ambitious plans to open another 20 new hospitals by 2030. John and his wife, Fiona, cover thousands of miles going to Rotary Clubs and functions all around the UK, as well as visiting all of their projects globally. They have local Ambassadors to in many parts of the UK, but they are looking for more. You can help this amazing charity by going to their website at https://www.globalsightsolutions.org/contact-us.
