Rotary supports Young LIves versus cancer

Young Lives vs Cancer understands that cancer is shocking, overwhelming, isolating… and completely unfair. Especially when you’re young. It takes over your life. Treatment is gruelling and your ambitions and dreams – education, relationships, career, travel – suddenly seem very far away.

That’s why we chose to help the charity in its fight to stop cancer destroying young lives.

As if a cancer diagnosis isn’t tough enough, the financial impact of cancer can be devastating. Research shows parents spend an average of £730 more every month when their child has cancer. Lots of travel for treatment, hotels, extra heating costs at home. It soon adds up, causing further anxiety and worry.

It’s not right that young people and parents should have to worry about money when they need to focus on treatment and all that comes with it. So Young Lives vs Cancer gives various grants, right from the moment of diagnosis, to help young people and families cope financially.

How Young LIves vs Cancer supports families in our region

When Bolsover Rotary had a presentation from Henry Jacob on behalf of the charity, it moved everyone present to want to help in some way.

Henry told us how he became involved with the Charity, through his own diagnosis as a child, and now as an advocate of the amazing work that they do.

Rotary members decided to invite Henry back so that they could help by making a donation of £500 to Young Lives vs Cancer.

So Henry joined us at our Christmas Party and is pictured here receiving the cheque from (a festive) Rotary President Graham.
